July: Not Too Hot to Garden

July 1 - 31, 2008

*Extend bloom seasons by deadheading spent blooms. This can help not only annuals and perennials, but also shrubs such as butterfly bush.
*Keep watering!! The ideal time is early in the morning so that the foliage has time to dry off before the hot sun sets in.
*If you are keeping up with your mums, pinch them for the last time around the 4th to ensure bushy plants full of blooms this fall.
*Attention rose growers: Continue your spray program to fight the many insects, diseases, and fungi that love the roses almost as much as you do.
*Scatter superphosphate around the base of azaleas, laurels, rhododendrons, and pieris to promote heavy flower bud formation.
*Fertilize bedding plants one last time to give them a boost to make it through fall.
