January

January 1 - 31, 2009

  • This is the month to plan! Make several sketches and ideas of how you want your garden to look in the coming seasons. This is the time to dream and plan.

  • Christmas greens can be used to spread over low growing plants for added winter protection.

  • Watch for any storm damage on trees and shrubs. Trim and prune any broken or injured branches you may find.

  • Wood ash from a fireplace or wood stove is an excellent soil additive. Dust over planting beds for a boost of potassium.

  • Fruit trees, grape vines, and berries need selective (but not heavy) pruning this month.

  • Make sure perennial beds are heavily mulched to prevent ground heaving. This occurs when the ground goes through periods of freezing and thawing which causes expansion and shrinking in the soil. These forces can easily push weak rooted perennials out of the ground and expose them to the killing cold temperatures.

  • Keep the bird feeders full to help them through their toughest time of year.
