June In The Garden

June 1 - 30, 2008

* Save yourself hours of future weeding by pulling the weeds now before they go to seed. You can also spray your lawn with a selective herbicide such as Weed-B-Gone to help with the unwanted intruders. Be sure to spray according to the label to prevent harming your lawn.
*Prune evergreens such as boxwood, leucothoe, and junipers.
*Deadhead all blooming plants to encourage new blooms.
*Watch out for japanese beetles on their usual favorite treats. Use Sevin or a similar pesticide. Beetle bags are actually an attractant, do not put them in your yard, give them to the neighbors.
*Use mixed annual planters to brighten up a deck or the front steps.
*Pay attention to fertilization as this will keep your garden looking great throughout the summer. You may need to supplement granular fertilizer with a liquid on occasion.
*Prune climbing roses after they bloom. Next year's blooms are produced on this summer's new growth.
*Pay close attention to watering, especially in containers and hanging baskets. They will dry out very quickly in the summer heat.
*As hard as it may be, resist cutting the foliage off of your spring bulbs. Allow them to die back to the ground naturally. This is vital for next year's display.
